In His Image - Fall Leaf Rubbings That Mean Something

What is one of the most common autumn art activities in childhood?  Leaf rubbings! So why not make them really count for an impressionable lesson?

Gather a variety of different types of leaves. Discuss whether you'll find a maple leaf on an oak tree. If a "helicopter" is planted, will it grow into a poplar?  If an acorn takes root, will it produce a fir tree?  What about other seeds?  Can a watermelon seed grow green beans?

Now turn to the Bible and read the following verses:

Genesis 1:26-27

26 ¶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Acts 17:28-29

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

Sing the hymn   "O My Father", paying special attention to and discussing verse three.

Demonstrate how to do a leaf rubbing.  Talk about how just like the image on the paper is in the image of the leaf, we are made in the image of God.  Then let the children copy the above scriptures and decorate with leaf rubbings.
